Graduation Flashback

Image
Today is the day! The marvelous day that my sister graduates! I didn't end up going into work at all today, ha. I'm a terrible person. Oh well, boss lady said it was fine, so whatever. Um, wrong picture. I'll just leave it up anyways. This isn't the sister that's graduating..(unless it's from the third grade...) This is! Dang...we both look a lot different now. She doesn't have braces and she wears contacts now. Still the same smile though. Haha. I feel bad I haven't posted one of my other sister...guess I'll do that too. Love you, R! Holy crap. Now she looks waaaaaay different. For starters, she's taller than me now, has longer hair, and is a teenager. Aah. I am old. This post is making me feel ancient. Ick. One last picture for the road? Probably my favorite taken that day. Awww. -K

I Cannot Believe My Eyes...

...how the world's filled with filth and lies... And it's plain to seeeeee, evil inside of meeeeeee, is on the rise....... Had that stuck in my head all day. Not sure why. Thought it'd make a good title though. Well, today was pretty boring. Stomach's been giving me grief for the last few days, so all I want to do is lay on the couch and watch mindless TV. Super great, right? I just don't have the energy/desire to care about anything anymore. Hopefully tomorrow things will get a little bit better in that regard. Work was fine, trained the new girl on how to format, and had an hour and a half long work meeting. Granted, it was about semi-important things, but still...an hour and half. So boring. And usually I try to make work meetings a little more enjoyable by being my charming, funny self, but I just wasn't feeling up to it today.  Meh. Just one of those days. I'm only working a half-day tomorrow, due to N's graduation :) I'm so proud of h

"Buckaroo Bard"

...is the title of the show I had to caption today. No joke. An hour of cowboy poetry. It was heinous. Just imagine, an hour of listening to bad poetry narrated by this mustached wonder: Vomiting on the inside Yeah. Rough going. Plus, my boss hired two more people, and we really don't need them. At all. We've already been way ahead of all our work since the summer started, and hiring more people really annoyed me. Now I get to fight over computers with the new girls, and one of them's engaged :/ Just my luck. I suppose it serves me right, since all I do is get annoyed by engaged people. But they're so annoying... *sigh* What else have I been up to lately...my little sister/best friend is graduating on Thursday and Grandma flew in today from Montana, so that's kind of exciting. It'll be a week full of family, woo! I've never been to a graduation besides my own, so that'll be kind of fun...or not. Her graduating class is over 500 people, so that&

Weekend Reads

Image
Well, it's been a busy weekend. Family BBQs (with people I didn't know were my family...), lots of working, reading, Nike Outlet-ing, and Memorial Day tomorrow! Woo! Thought I'd give you a rundown of what I've been reading lately. Les Mis was pretty hard, so I've been reading some fluffy filler teenage angsty stuff. Delirium  by Lauren Oliver I got this one for Christmas as well, but never got around to it until now. Like I said, fluffy teenage angst, but not too bad for a dystopian YA book. This book is all about love - the government says it's a disease, Lena says otherwise. She meets Alex, and bang! Love. So much love. Can they escape to live their happy lives together in the Wilds? Three guesses, and the first two don't count. Which leads us to... Pandemonium  by Lauren Oliver Also a Christmas gift. Second book in the trilogy started by Delirium . Since Rob is planning on reading this, I won't really say anything, but pretty good. Hav

Likes Part I

Image
Since I gave you a rundown of some of my dislikes yesterday, it was about time for a positive one, right? Sure, why not. The colors green, blue, and purple...In that order. Yeah. Rain Oceans Crossword puzzles Marvel JCW's. Either a Grasshopper or a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup shake.  Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! All the time! Music. Playing it, listening to it...All of it. Books. All of them. Don't ever give me money and leave me in a bookstore... That's all I can think of right now.  Have some more Big Bang Theory! Yay sports! -K

Dislikes Part 1

Image
Today was relatively uneventful. Me and my best friend hung out. She's engaged too, but she usually only talks about it when I ask, which is very appreciative. She asked me to be her maid of honor as soon as she got engaged, so I've been figuring out what that means. As far as I can tell, she just wants me to keep her grounded. Haha. I guess I can be pretty good at that. But I've never been a maid of honor before...or even been in a wedding party, for that matter. I generally try to avoid weddings, for reasons you can probably guess. (Read: I dislike them.) What else do I dislike...Oh, what a list. I dislike: Stupid people Awkward couples (refer to #1). Justin Bieber (and any overblown pop star. Adam Levine is an exception.) People that lie to me and think I won't know Being patronized Guy Fiere People that smell weird People who use Facebook as their personal venting place. Guess what. Nobody cares. Get over yourself. Family Dinner

Image
...Which was full of engaged people. *sigh* My extended family is getting to the age that people are starting to get engaged. My two girl cousins my age are both engaged, and I was coerced into dinner with both of them tonight. They're both really nice, but it's just hard to sit there and listen to the merits of cream vs. ecru tablecloths, and it's killing me. *sigh* Oh well. I feel like talking to every engaged person is the same. They're all like "my life my life my life MY FIANCE MY FIANCE MY FIANCE my life MY FIANCE my life MY FIANCE." And then they're like "How are you doing?" and you're like "Well, you know. The same. Living with my roommates, doing the whole single life thing..." and they're like "Oh, that's so fun!" and I'm like "..." and they're like "MY FIANCE AND MY WEDDING". It's a vicious cycle. and of course it wasn't this bad. I tend to exaggerate. But my g

Mondays & Mechanics

Today was semi-eventful, I guess. A few things of note happened: I went and got my oil changed, and while I was waiting, I made friends with a little kid. Which is a big deal for me, because I get really nervous around little kids and don't really like to be around them all the time, but this one was cute. Him and his dad and his older brother came in and you could tell the dad had been through the wringer, he just looked dead. Mom must have been on a girl's weekend away or something. But anyway, this little kid runs right over to me and tries to share his drink and his popcorn with me, and just keeps jabbering the way little two-year-olds do. He was covered in stickers, and I mean covered. Oh, and then a train came by.  Kid's dad: "Look guys! A train!" My new friend: [gasps and smashes his face against the window] "TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN!!!!!" So that was exciting. Usually little kids don't try and make friends with me and this one did. It was p

Old Crosswords

Well, here's an obligatory update. Haven't been up to much this weekend, a lot of baseball to live-transcribe. Started another book, just a fluffy little best-seller to relax with after Les Mis. Guys. I got 24 likes on my status about finishing it. I'm pretty sure that's more than all my other statuses combined. I'm so legit. But anyways, enough about me. Or is that even a problem, seeing as it's my blog? If you don't want to hear about me and my thoughts, I'm not sure as to why you'd even read this. What else am I up to. Oh yes, crossword puzzles. One of my favorite pastimes. I do them when my other captioning buddy is taking her turn and I have nothing to do. I've gotten good enough to usually finish the Monday or Tuesday puzzles, but I can never can finish any later in the week. New York Times crosswords are hard, man. But I bought this "crossword-a-day" calendar at DI and it was only $3! (because it was from 2010...but whatever

Guess What!!!

Image
I FINISHED LES MIS!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I feel so accomplished right now. I just finished a book with over 1000 pages! I am so legit! Final stats: Book Acquired: December 25th, 2012 Book Finished: May 17, 2013 Pages: 1,232 And what did I think of it? Hmm. Victor Hugo had a lot to say and used a lot of words to say it. While I wasn't a fan of the 15 pages on the Parisian sewer system (you guys already know all about that...) and his other random rants or pages upon pages of descriptions of buildings and cities, the actual story is very moving. While Valjean was never my favorite character, reading the book helped me understand him a lot better. I really enjoyed more backstory on Fantine and the priest that gave Valjean the candlesticks, they have such a rich and complicated past. I dislike Cosette as much as I always did (surprise, surprise), and like Eponine as much as I always did. I also appreciate Gavroche a little more, and don't care as much for

Old Job

Image
Today I went back to visit my old job at a library I had a couple years ago. I started there a sophomore in high school as a page (read: I put away all the books that people returned after they were checked in) and left for freshman year. I came back that summer, but I got upgraded to being a clerk, who does everything else in the library. Since I was the youngest employee, it was almost implied that I was the one that knew all the technology, so I was in charge of unjamming printers, fixing copiers and computers, and all sorts of other technical stuff I had to learn how to do. It was quite the learning curve. The best part was helping people find books that they would like. I soon had a group of kids coming up and talking to me about the latest book they were reading and it was awesome just to see how excited they were. They were so cute. That's probably what I miss most about that job, the people I got to help and the awesome coworkers I had. Good times. My job now is good too, b

Who am I?

Image
I'M JEAN FREAKING VALJEAN ...Jean Valjean! (Bet you weren't expecting that.) Sorry, still on my Les Mis kick. And no,  I haven't finished it yet...Although last week, my friends and I watched the most recent movie AND 25th anniversary edition (Hello, Nick Jonas! And the same Eponine from the movie, who's my favorite character. Every girl identifies with Eponine at least once in her life (or more than once...) Anyway...In case you haven't noticed, I'm not too much like Jean Valjean. I guess I can be pretty withdrawn and have my secrets that I don't like talking about, sure. Plus, even though I've definitely messed up in my life, I still try to do my best to make up for those mistakes. So in that way, I'm kind of like Valjean, but that's about where the similarities end. I'm much more like other fictional characters...like... Iago! "Oh, that's a big surprise! That's incredible - I think I'm going to have a heart at

Football Woes

Summer's been good for me, guys. I have more time to keep this updated (You're welcome, Rob...) and do all sorts of other things. I'm working on Les Mis too, don't you worry, although currently we're watching it in my apartment and I don't really feel like reading after spending all day at work. Or typing for that matter, so it's a short one today. But I thought I'd share my current work project. The bigwigs of post production have decided that we need to caption every football game ever played by our team. Ever. We made a giant list, and we have 157 games to do before the end of the summer. With our current workforce, that means two a week per employee, and I think I overheard someone quitting today, so that puts it up to more like three a week. Working on football is a big deal, it takes four to five hours to transcribe (type out), and then another three hours to format (make them look uniform and good) and timecode (match the caption with the vide

Just Throw a Brick

Image
So I'm sure you're all wondering why my blog is called "Just Throw a Brick". The answer? Because, that's why. No really, there isn't really a reason. Just a backstory. Ready? So one time, my roommate Natalie went on a blind date with one of her married cousin's friends, and I was at home chilling with my other roommates and some guys. They had just broken out a strange board game that involved lots of strategy, too much strategy for my physics-addled brain on a Friday night, so I was hiding in the corner halfway reading a book and halfway watching "Four Weddings" (A stupid show? Yes. An entertaining show?  Very yes.) So I was chilling there, and watching my show like a pathetic single person, and then Natalie comes running in and is like "Katelyn! Come hang out with us!" Being bored, I agreed, but only if I could bring my popcorn I had just popped (I am a HUGE popcorn person. Movie theatre popcorn is one of my favorite foods on this

Sundays & Sewers

Well, it's Sunday. I'm currently chilling in my living room taking a break from Les Mis (the book, not the movie.) I got the unabridged version for Christmas and I've been trying to get through it ever since, but it's been hard because of school and work, and I just don't have the time for it. Les Mis is a book you have to be able to concentrate on, it's not some light fluffy read. It's also highly frustrating in some parts with the exorbitant amount of details on pointless matters. For example, I'm to the part where Marius has been shot and Jean Valjean is dragging him through the sewers. Except, we can't read about that, because we need to read about the sewers of Paris for...15 pages. It talks about people who inspect the sewers, where they run, blah blah blah. It truly is a test of patience to read this book. But it's funny, because I just transcribed a show at work about big cities, and the last one was on Paris. I'll let you guess wha

Pretzels

Image
Just got back from Iron Man 3. Guys. Pepper Freaking Potts. That's all I have to say. Go see it, guys. I'm still on the fence on whether I like it as much as Iron Man 1, but I did like it better than Iron Man 2. Plus, it's me and my best friend Natalie's tradition to go to Marvel movies the Saturday after they come out and stop at Pretzelmaker and get a cinnamon sugar pretzel and a fruit shake and sneak them into the theatre (yes, I am aware that I spell theatre the British way. Not a typo, I swear. It's just habit, and I don't know why. I'm not even slightly British...) Yes. Anyway. So we go  over to Pretzelmaker to get our pretzels, but they're closed. So depressing. So we had to get pretzels from concessions, which was twice as expensive and not even half as good. It was tragic, really. But back to the original point of this post. Iron Man. He's my favorite Avenger purely because of his sense of humor and attitude. He's hilarious. Capta

A Roommate Update

Image
Some of you have been asking for a roommate update. Well, all my annoying roommates moved out (Can I get a HALLELUJAH?!?!!) The apartment is clean. ALL the time. And when I say all, I mean all. Our sink is always empty. Our counters are clean. Our table is clean. Everything is clean! It's amazing. If any of you have come over back when I used to vent about my roommates all the time, you should come over now. It looks really good. It's too bad I'm working a lot these days and am hardly ever home, but the few hours I am are nice. Other random/useless updates...I really like vanilla Greek yogurt with granola. I eat it all the time. I was introduced to it by my ex-roommate, (who I miss more than I ever thought possible) and I really like it now. I also made my famous oatmeal chocolate chip cookies last week, and they were so good! I only make them like once a semester and when my roommate was going to leave she asked if I'd make her some for her journey back to her family
