Music & JAMN

Image
Anyone else just having a bleh day today? I think mine stems from the fact that the Fourth is coming up, and that's usually such a fun holiday in Utah. I miss living so close to the Stadium of Fire (although with Tim McGraw headlining this year, I'm not as sad. Haha. My hatred for country music is still strong as ever!) Oh, you want to know what I'm jamming to now, you ask? Well, it has been awhile since a music post... What K is Listening To Now First off, these all come straight off my Spotify "You Can Do It!!!" playlist. I play it whenever I'm driving to work, because I need a ton of motivation to walk into work sometimes. 1. Left Hand Free, alt+J Well, my left hand's free... I just want to say, first off, that I totally knew this song/loved this song/listened to this song WAY before Civil War came out. #hipster First it hit my Pandora, then it hit a Suits episode. Ah. Suits. Coming back soon! 2. Lean On, Major Lazer  Blow a ki...

Jeffrey Has Taken Ill + Recent Reads

It's Friday! I think the only thing that keeps me going throughout the workweek is that Saturdays, we have nothing. It's blissful. We usually meal plan and grocery shop in the mornings, and then do something fun for the rest of the day. Even if "fun" consists of walking around the huge outlet mall near our apartment. Or we'll take a trip to the two-story Target. Last Saturday we hit up the local Petco for a new fishtank for Jeffrey. Speaking of, he's been very listless lately. He barely makes it off his little leaf to say hi to me when I get home. I think it may be near the end for the little guy. :/ Don't die, Jeffrey! You're my only friend out here! And no, I still have never seen him eat. I don't know what's up with that little dude. Happy thoughts that don't include poor sick Jeffrey... Um... I'm getting back on my CBMR kick this week. I got my compensation book yesterday and I read it yesterday. All of it. At one point I looked u...

Pre-Wednesday Books - Steelheart

Image
I finished Starbird Murphy and the World Outside  this week, so that was good. It was a fun little quick read, everything ends as you want it to, although a bunch of questions remain. It wasn't tied up enough for me, but for a short little YA general fiction book it did all right. I'm glad Starbird decided to stay in Seattle and go to school, and that she and Ben ended up together instead of her and dumb Indus. And personally, I believe her father is Iron John, not EARTH. That guy's a few fries short of a Happy Meal. This week, I reached out (on the recommendation of a friend) for Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart . Normally the science fiction genre isn't my favorite, but I trust E's opinion so I'm taking a whack at it (said in Parent Trap style). *"Bad to the Bone" plays in the background*  That being said, my stomach has been on strike lately (Rice Chex and water, anyone?) so I haven't felt like doing anything other than laying on a cou...

I'm (not) Groot

Image
Well, today is graduation day for the university I work for, so I had to make sure I got to work super early to get a parking spot, and now I'm sitting here counting down the hours until I get to leave. (.5 hours down, 4.5 hours to go...) Although once I go home, that's not a ton better either. Since C works so much going home consists of me picking something to clean, cleaning it while concurrently watching Gilmore Girls or While You Were Sleeping, completing the cleaning process, and deciding to cook something. Yesterday was a crock pot special, not sure what I'll make today. I also attempted making chocolate chip cookies and they ended up okay. I guess C liked them so that's good. I've been a bit wary of cookies ever since my famous oatmeal chocolate chips went to total crap that one time. I've been building my confidence up slowly in that regard. Haha, in other news, just saw the president of the university walking around in full academic graduation regali...

Jupiter Ascending: A Review

Image
So yesterday was essentially the weirdest day of my whole life. Bar none. We'll start with THIS randomness that went down yesterday.  Click here! You will not be disappointed!  Between that and that "Is the dress blue and black? Gold and white?" Me and Callin are totally #goldandwhite, by the way. THEN me and W went to see Jupiter Ascending, which was everything I hoped it would be and sooooo much more. So much more. It is just as ridiculous, derived, and poorly-written as everyone says, but oh my gosh. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie. At the very very least, you will be entertained. So many favorite lines from this movie, I can't even. Here's a small synopsis. This is Jupiter Jones (hence the title...) PS, my eye shadow is perfect. All the time.  Jupiter's dad got murdered in Russia by an angry Russian mob trying to take all their money. Jupiter is born on a ship on the way to America. Now fast forward like 20 years. Now Jupiter cleans r...

Guess who's car is broken again... MINE! *rolls eyes* As C kindly pointed out, it was exactly a year ago the poor thing broke down too. Apparently it and Harry Potter's birthday don't mix. Happy Birthday Harry, by the way. C thinks it's crazy, but whatever, man. I grew up with that guy. I still remember being so so so excited when I got Prisoner of Azkaban for my birthday, my very first HP book that was all mine! *HP nerdiness over*  Wait, just a little more. Haven't been on Pottermore in awhile, but I'm totally a Ravenclaw. Awwwwwwwwww yeah. Testify. Anyway, back to my life. So C had another game today. He even caught a touchdown pass, yay! And yes, I could tell it was a touchdown, for those who are wondering from the last post, haha. But his team still lost, unfortunately. Although the next team playing after him had two guys I used to caption for all the time when I worked sports captioning, so that was super weird. I felt like I should b...

Day 2: Portland

Image
Well, after seven hours of driving today, we're in Portland! Here's today's stats: Movie Count: 2 (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Robin Hood [Russell Crowe version]) TV Episode Count: 0 Music: My self-created "Warm Bodies" soundtrack...on repeat. Snacks: Animal crackers, Sour Patch Kids Annoyance Level: low-moderate (Mostly due to again, technical difficulties, but today went a little better as soon as we got all our stuff packed up). This is probably my current favorite on my Warm Bodies playlist. Either that, or... Haven't watched the music video, so I have no idea how good this is. But it's an awesome song for just cruising down the freeway. I love freeways! Especially with the windows down...that's one of my favorite things in the world. For sure. Loud music, windows down, driving nowhere in particular. Tomorrow we're headed deeper into Oregon, but not too long of a drive, so that'll be nice. Can't wait until we ...

Zombies and Tornadoes

Which word's definition is "(v.) to renounce something"? A. Abdicate B. Brook C. Auger D. Obfuscate E. Abnegate And the answer is...E! Yeah, I didn't get it either. I thought it was abdicate, but apparently that means "to give up a duty or position", as opposed to "to renounce something". Whatever. It's little things like that that are going to make me suck at this test, I just know it. Oh well. I found this cool website that throws definitions and words at you and you have to answer them, so that's been helpful. I'm getting a little bit better every day, so that's nice. Still feel like a total idiot most of the time though. What have I been up to lately...saw Warm Bodies over the weekend, good times. Funny movie. Might be the only zombie movie I'll ever enjoy (or frankly, watch). "Don't be creepy, don't be creepy, don't be creepy...This date is not going well. I want to die all over again." ...

Tuesday Night Musings

Image
Well, I went back to work today. Woot! It wasn't terrible, really. Got to do some live captioning, which was nice. Don't want to get out of practice! Like that would ever happen... Boss lady told me to teach new girl to live caption, so I did my best. I'm really not the "show you how to do it" type. I had to learn by experimentation, so she should too, right? Gosh, I'm mean. In other news...I signed up for the GRE last weekend! And the more I prepare, the more worried I get. I thought I had a pretty extensive vocabulary. Ha! Ha! Ha! Want to look at an example question? Here you go. Choose the word with the most opposite meaning of the bold word. Recondite A. Abstruse B. Erudite C. Understandable D. Obtuse E. Seismic Give up? The answer is C. Don't ask me... The face I made while grading my practice test I thought I was smart. The GRE is going to prove me wrong, I just know it. But it's okay, with a lot of vocabulary study and som...

Pretzels

Image
Just got back from Iron Man 3. Guys. Pepper Freaking Potts. That's all I have to say. Go see it, guys. I'm still on the fence on whether I like it as much as Iron Man 1, but I did like it better than Iron Man 2. Plus, it's me and my best friend Natalie's tradition to go to Marvel movies the Saturday after they come out and stop at Pretzelmaker and get a cinnamon sugar pretzel and a fruit shake and sneak them into the theatre (yes, I am aware that I spell theatre the British way. Not a typo, I swear. It's just habit, and I don't know why. I'm not even slightly British...) Yes. Anyway. So we go  over to Pretzelmaker to get our pretzels, but they're closed. So depressing. So we had to get pretzels from concessions, which was twice as expensive and not even half as good. It was tragic, really. But back to the original point of this post. Iron Man. He's my favorite Avenger purely because of his sense of humor and attitude. He's hilarious. Capta...

Immunology Causes Deep Thoughts

Image
No, really. Once you get past all the words you can't read/pronounce/tell are English, it's all awesome from there. My two favorite science bros Today's post comes from a quote out of my Infections and Immunology book, "Sherris Medical Microbiology" (2010). The author writes (describing how Louis Pasteur was treated after he discovered a vaccine to zoonoses anthracis, a disease in herbivorous livestock): "He was cheered and carried on the shoulders of the grateful farmers of the district, an experience now, unhappily, largely restricted to winning football coaches." Powerful stuff. No really, this whimsical sentence actually made me think for awhile. What if the great scientists of our day were celebrated as much as sports stars? Allow me to speculate. First off, we would have a lot more scientists. Science is such an amazing field, with new discoveries made almost every day. Can you imagine how much faster we could cure diseases if everyo...
