I Am Grumpy Cat...

Image
So I have been doing finals all week, and my brain is pretty much fried. So I went on the humor section of Pinterest, and I discovered Grumpy Cat. My life is changed forever. It's like me, but as a cat. I have never enjoyed a meme more than this. And possibly my favorite...as if I could pick a favorite... Happy Finals Week, everybody. -K

Katelyn Sings

Image
...in University Chorale, so it's not that special. But hey, it's something. It has actually become one of my favorite classes, because when I come I just sing. I don't have to worry about anything else besides singing as well as I can in my little Alto 2 section. By the way, I've got a joke for you. Q: How many altos does it take to change a lightbulb? A: 8, one to change it and seven to complain about how high it is. Hardy har har. But wait, there's more! Q: How many sopranos does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Just one to hold the lightbulb while the world revolves around her. Okay, now THAT'S funny. You can probably tell that sopranos annoy me to no end. Sorry it's short today, friends. It's been a long couple weeks and it's not about to get any better. ... OH WAIT! It's Thanksgiving next week! YEEEEESSSS! See you on the flip side, -K A picture for the road? And again, Whose Line provides my life with joy...Well,

WARNING: VENTING AHEAD!!!!

Image
You have been sufficiently warned. If you're looking for something that will bring a gentle smile to your face, like a bunch of kittens or something, I've got a website for you. Google Images. If you're here to read about my ANNOYING roommate, read on, friends. You ready for this? Okay. First of all, you should know that I will do almost anything to avoid contention with roommates. I've found that if you pick your battles extremely selectively (like for me, when it comes to the A/C), you get a lot farther than crying about everything. True story. So I complain a lot when I get in mediums like this because I know they're never going to read/never care to read/never even think that I would have a blog. I'm just going to make a bullet list of problems, if it's all the same to you. Shake up the format, and all. Chronologically through the day, if possible.  First thing in the morning. Truth is, I don't really like talking to people in the morning, but

Immunology Causes Deep Thoughts

Image
No, really. Once you get past all the words you can't read/pronounce/tell are English, it's all awesome from there. My two favorite science bros Today's post comes from a quote out of my Infections and Immunology book, "Sherris Medical Microbiology" (2010). The author writes (describing how Louis Pasteur was treated after he discovered a vaccine to zoonoses anthracis, a disease in herbivorous livestock): "He was cheered and carried on the shoulders of the grateful farmers of the district, an experience now, unhappily, largely restricted to winning football coaches." Powerful stuff. No really, this whimsical sentence actually made me think for awhile. What if the great scientists of our day were celebrated as much as sports stars? Allow me to speculate. First off, we would have a lot more scientists. Science is such an amazing field, with new discoveries made almost every day. Can you imagine how much faster we could cure diseases if everyo

Alpha and Beta

Hello all you reader people. How's it going? (Rhetorical, please don't answer out loud at your computer.) I've been doing well, just getting back into school, work, etc. It's been pretty so-so, I'm not home a whole ton because I'm always at school or working. But I have spent enough time in my new apartment complex to figure out who the alphas and the betas are. Confused? Allow me to explain. Alpha male: The "it" guy. Everyone wants this guy. You all know one of them, and you all want him because that's just the way it goes. Everyone wants the alpha, that's why he's the alpha. Beta male: The "it" guy's friends. He hangs out with Alpha because he knows he can pick up the slack because let's face it, Alpha can't date all the women, and inevitably leaves a trail of broken hearts and floods of tears wherever he goes. Betas are around to take care of the ones that Alpha deems not acceptable. Gamma male: These are the

This One's for You!

Well, faithful readers, here's where I actually talk about my life instead of post random pictures of things I like. If that's your cup of tea then...go on Tumblr or something. Ahem. I've moved to a new apartment complex where I know absolutely no one, and so far it's been pretty fun. I've made good friends with a few of my roommates, and I get along well with all the rest so it's been fun. I have one from Russia, which has been fun. It's forced me to have a different kind of humor, since my usual sarcasm can be confusing to her. It's definitely been weird, but I'm getting used to it. One problem though, my roommates keep turning off the A/C, but if you know me, you know I like to be cold. If I feel crappy because it's too hot, you don't want to be anywhere near me. True story. So anyways, I'm forced to secretly turn on the air conditioning when people aren't in the room/aren't home. I feel kind of a like a secret agent or a s

Bye, Olympics!

Watching the Olympics with your family can be fun. Mom: "Do you think these are real Brazilians, or British people dressed up like Brazilians?" Me: "Aren't Brazilians like naked all the time?" Dad: "Well, they aren't exactly dressed..." [pause] Mom: "We'll probably be editing the Opening Ceremony..." Haha. Brazilians be crazy. -K

Olympic Love

Image
All right people. I'm about to go into a sports rant. I FREAKING LOVE THE OLYMPICS!!! That is all. Just kidding. Can I just say, I loved actually understanding what was happening in the Opening Ceremony, and understanding the history and the music! Don't get me wrong, I love learning about other cultures, and the Olympics are a great place to do it, but I really enjoyed understanding everything that was happening...also that all the music was in English. England is such a cool place with centuries of amazing history, and I think they did a good job of portraying that in the opening sequences with the smokestacks and such. They kept it lighthearted and fun, at the same time showing the seriousness of the Olympics and the responsibility that their city/country has to the world for the next couple of weeks. Well done, London!  They say a picture is worth a thousand words...so I added a bunch of pictures. Because words cannot explain the love I have for the Olympics

Fun at Work...Not-so-fun at home...

Image
Readers! How's it going! Sorry it's been awhile, just been working a lot and enjoying my summer. Speaking of working, it was a good week of random facts. Did you know Kool-Aid was invented in 1926? Yeah, that stuff is WAY older than I expected. Does it even have an expiration date? I mean, if you found one from the 1920s, would it still work? The idea of that really grosses me out, actually. Oh, and it was also a week of fixing heinous typos. My favorite? Having to fix someone's misspell of "Paul Bunyan" as "Paul Bunion". Seriously, coworkers? Paul Bunion? Makes him sound more like a geriatric gimp than an ax-wielding giant. But hey, whatever man.  Hm. Other things that aren't about work...Well, one of my new favorite shows is Leverage (I'm still only on the first season, but it's way good). TNT, people. Seriously in love with this show right now. What else...Well, since all of my other roommates are dating someone rig

A Tough Decision

Image
Guess what, guys! Chem lab's over! And I think I did pretty well! We won't know for sure until the final grades come out in a couple more weeks, but it's looking good! YAY!!!! Anyways... Now it's on to my piano final. My teacher's grading me on "how much I've improved", and while I do think I've gotten better at the songs, I don't feel like it's too noticeable, so hopefully he hears something that I don't hear. I guess we'll see. In other news, I discovered my favorite episode of Psych. Or at least, my two favorites. I can't decide between Last Night Gus , Or American Duos. As you can tell, it's a hard choice. Suggestions? ~K

Laboratory Katelyn

Image
Sorry I haven't been on here for awhile, friends. If anyone even reads this thing. Oh  yeah, no self-pity. Sorry about that little lapse in judgement there. Anyways, so I've been taking a chemistry lab class this spring, and I hate chemistry. Actually doing the lab isn't bad though, and I'm not half bad. I can follow directions, which is all chem lab is, so I'm pretty good at it. Woo! One chemistry class I (hopefully) won't have to take again! Or a third time... *sigh* If you haven't noticed, I haven't really done so well in chem. But hey, that's about to change! I'm going to do great in this one! I know it! (hopefully). First test is tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes. Cross your fingers! Ready for a bad chemistry pickup line? I knew you were. If a guy says this to me sometime, I think I might die. Hahaha. Thank you, Big Bang Theory, for making my life so much better. I love understanding smart jokes. And then I shrink a little ins

Katelyn's Happy Thought

Sometimes when I'm teaching piano, I feel like I'm not really making a difference here. It's a fact that as soon as kid's start growing up and deciding they don't want to take piano, like most of them eventually will, they'll move on and I'll be nothing more than a "I used to..." story. But this week, one of my kids told me, "Katelyn, I like coming to piano. Piano is fun!" It was then that I realized that even though some of these kids may quit and never think of me again, I still made a difference in their lives right now .  And if I can get these kids to find something they love about music, then I've done what I set out to do. I love my piano kids!

The Dish Fairy

Sometimes I get annoyed. It doesn't take a lot to annoy me, but it takes a lot to get me to tell you about it. I'm kind of a roll-with-the-punches kind of girl. But let me tell you, I'm getting really close to throwing out some punches with the current dish situation. Yes, the dish situation. Didn't you just feel a tingle of dread run down your spine? I know I did. Here's the thing. I think my roommates think there's a dish fairy that magically comes and does the dishes and leaves them all sparkling clean so they can have clean pots for their Pasta Roni and clean bowls for their Special K. I am not kidding. I swear. It's like when there's no dishes because I don't have time and I'm sick of doing them all week, they're like, "What? We have no bowls!!!", and I'm like "no DUH". And then when they do do the dishes (once every month or so), they're like "I did the dishes! Now we have clean ones!" like they

Katelyn Goes to a YSA Dance

Here it goes people. You get to hear about my awesome New Year's Eve. I just can't wait to tell you all about it...Ha. Ha. Ha. If you have something more interesting to do, like watching paint dry, then be my guest. I won't be offended. Really. ... Oh good, you're still here. Actually, it's not that bad, compared to some other ones I've had. I feel like the older I get, the lamer holidays like New Year's Eve become. Since I'm a college student, all my friends disappear after Finals Week and magically appear when the term starts, which basically leaves me with nothing to do. It's a good thing that my best friend lives close by, so I don't feel so much like a loser. This year, we got invited to a local YSA dance, so we decided to drop in. Okay. You've all been there. You walk in. Simultaneously, you're hit with every variety of Axe ever made, as well as the entire Bath and Body Works collection. Now add those together with an overw
